Apple decided to shelve its electric car ambitions to double down on AI. Bezos and Nvidia joined OpenAI in funding ā€˜Figure AI,ā€™ a humanoid robot startup. Microsoft struck a deal with France's Mistral AI, which recently released a new high-performance model and a chatbot challenging GPT-4, Claude and Gemini dominance. Meanwhile, Google DeepMind's ā€˜Genieā€™ is out of the bottle  ā€” an AI model creating playable virtual worlds from a single image. GitHub launched ā€˜Copilot Enterpriseā€™, an AI coding assistant for businesses (ready to autocomplete developers' dreams). And for those who like their AI with a side of aesthetics, Playground's v2.5 is out and its makers claim itā€™s better than DALL-E 3 and Midjourney v5.2. 

The legal tussle between the New York Times and OpenAI is heating up. OpenAI alleges that the NYT paid someone to 'hack' ChatGPT for evidence, a claim that the Times describes as 'bizarre.' Meanwhile, Google is paying publishers to test an unreleased gen AI platform (in exchange for a five-figure sum, publishers are required to use the tool to publish three stories per day). WordPress and Tumblr plan to sell user content to Midjourney and OpenAI. Perplexity launches an AI-generated daily news podcast, promising a revolution in how we consume news. And, Chinaā€™s state TV puts on air AI-developed cartoon series

In a rare admission, the US military has acknowledged using AI, through Project Maven, to identify airstrike targets. Amidst these advancements, The White House is pushing for software to be written in memory-safe languages to improve cybersecurity. The dark side of AI emerged in California, where a middle school was rocked by turmoil over AI-generated explicit images of its students, prompting a police investigation. And, on a lighter note, a man tired of his neighborā€™s loud music created an AI device that hacks his speakers.
